The Spring Lounge’s History

Spring Lounge (as it is known today) has a long colorful history. It originally opened (illegally) in the 1920s as a "to go" shop that filled buckets of beer for take out. In the 1940s, it was known as Chappy's and in the 1960s it became Wilson's 10:30 (named for the starting time of the crap games held nightly in the basement, as evidenced by the craps table unearthed there during recent renovations). Although it was named the Spring Lounge in the 1970s, it was known in the neighborhood as the Shark Bar, for the large stuffed sharks that are prominently displayed.
